Sundance Channel Presents Four Eyed Monsters in Second Life!
Sundance Channel will be presenting a screening of Four Eyed Monsters in Second Life. Second Life is a 3D virtual reality user created environment that you access through a free downloadable application. It’s used for everything from virtual dancing at virutal night clubs to virtual gambling and virtual sex. It’s a pretty outrageous envirnment where everyone runs around in scantaly clad 3D outfits that get purchased with Lynden the currency of second life that is actually transferable into cash.
We first found out about 2nd life on a Rocketboom episode over a year ago. The video made me think this was sci-fi, like it didn’t really exist, but looking deeper I realized that it did and might eventually evolve into sort of the new way you interface with the internet, instead of everything on a 2 dimensional screen, it could be all around you in 3D and instead of you being represented by a little black arrow on the screen, you could be represented by a 3D avatar version of yourself. I got pretty excited about it all, but had no time to download the software and actually jump into second life.
Fast forward about a year Mark Wallace saw our film at IFC Center during our Thursdays in September run and wrote the a blog about Life Logging. He talked about our film as an example of using tools of the digital age to document as many details of ones life as possible. He also talked about how that concept is really facilitated in virtual worlds like Second Life. Then some how in Jerry’s reaction post to that where he talked about the idea of screening Four Eyed Monsters in Second Life and some comments back and forth on these two blogs, I basically took 5 minutes to add “2nd Life” to the list of countries so if someone wanted to request the film in second life they’d have the option to do that and like any other city, if we got above 150 requests, we’d book a screening.
Then at a certain point Jerry and Sundance started talking and Sundance was really interested in presenting the screening in second life in the theater they’d been wanting to build for this exact kind of thing. But we also wanted to have our own second life area so Jerry put together a team of second life devlopers to get that off the ground. He writes and provides screen grabs of of that process here
Also as a result of Sundance Channels press release about working together there was even a little bit of online buzz.
So while your waiting for the Sundance Channel theater to be ready, in the mean time you can visit our pad and do some pretty cool stuff.
